Writers and Agents

This week I'm going to devote the whole blog to discussing the relationship between writers and agents. 

Something like a year or so ago, I parted ways with my first agent.  We parted on good terms and he remains a friend.  Sometimes those things just happen.  Tastes change, goals change.  That's life.  I admit that it was one of the scarier things I've done in my writing career.  I feared that getting an agent at all had been a fluke and that I was a fool to give up what I had.  I've jumped out of a plane, and this was scarier.

But I found a fantastic new agent—Amy Boggs of the Donald Maass Literary Agency—and proved to myself that it wasn't a fluke.  It wasn't easy, though.

And that's what I'm going to discuss this week.

Tomorrow I'm going to talk about expectations...yours specifically.

 Wednesday, I'll discuss the process of querying and some of the things that annoyed me about it.

Thursday I'll discuss your responsibilities to the agents you're querying, and the responsibilities they have to you.

Friday I'll post my query letter and break it down into the good, the bad, and the ugly.

As a bonus, let me know if there's any interest and I'll run a query critique week for the last week of August.  I'd do it next week, but I'm going to be on vacation.  Interest should be taken to mean more than Matthew ;)
