The Five Stages of Andrew Brawley

If you've had any contact with me over the last couple of years, you've probably heard me talking about my hospital book.  I've also called it The Walls or Patient F at various times.

It's been a very personal book for me and the journey that began with an idea about a boy living in a hospital is finally complete.

I'm so excited and proud to announce that the hospital book, now known as The Five Stages of Andrew Brawley, has been acquired by Michael Strother at Simon Pulse.  Not only am I thrilled that I get to continue working with the amazing people at Simon Pulse, but I'm absolutely overwhelmed at how fiercely Michael embraced this story of mine.

The Five Stages of Andrew Brawley is more than a story to me.  It's a journey.  And it's going to be freaking amazing.

Five Stages isn't just a book about a boy.  It's a love story.  A story of redemption. A story that made my friends throw the manuscript at my door and tell me that hated my guts.  And it's a graphic novel too.  My narrator Drew writes a graphic novel in the story, and that's going to be drawn and incorporated into the book.  Seriously, you're not even going to believe how cool it is.

I couldn't have asked for more.  And I couldn't have done it without the support of my lovely agent, Amy Boggs.  She really championed Drew and Rusty, and I'm so grateful and lucky.

Five Stages isn't slated to come out until 2015 because of all the artwork that's going to be done, but I promise it'll be worth the wait.

And now, I'm going to go do some happy dancing in the parking lot.

  1. It's a beautiful story. How much has it changed?

I expect the comics parts to be epic.

    1. Not too much since you read it...I don't think. We'll be doing revisions, of course, but the biggest thing is that those comic book script pages will be actual comic book pages. Which I'm just blown away by. Like, I still can't believe that's real.
